Virna Borgogno
Virna Borgogno is a family-owned winery located in the heart of the renowned Barolo appellation in Piedmont, Italy, where centuries of winemaking tradition have allowed Nebbiolo to achieve its finest expression in terms of structure, aromatic complexity, and aging potential. The modern winery was established during the 20th century and bears the name of Virna Borgogno, the first woman in Italy to earn a degree in oenology, who today manages the estate together with her sister, Ivana.
The estate encompasses approximately 10–12 hectares of vineyards across some of Barolo's most prestigious cru sites. The diverse soil compositions of these vineyards provide nuanced expressions of Nebbiolo, allowing each wine to reflect the unique character of its origin. Production is centered on estate-grown grapes and traditional winemaking techniques, combining temperature-controlled fermentation with aging in large oak casks (botti) and, for selected wines, smaller oak tonneaux to achieve harmony between structure, aromatic complexity, and longevity.
The winery's flagship wines are its Barolo DOCG labels, including both the classic Barolo blend "Noi" and single-vineyard expressions that showcase the distinctive personalities of individual crus. Virna Borgogno Barolo wines are characterized by their deep ruby color, layered aromas of red and dark berries, floral notes, spice, and remarkable elegance supported by firm yet refined tannins and excellent aging potential.
In addition to Barolo, the winery produces a range of classic Piedmont wines, including Barbera d'Alba, Dolcetto d'Alba, Langhe Nebbiolo, and Langhe Rosso, offering a broader expression of the region's rich viticultural heritage and winemaking tradition.
